    Graduated!

    G'Day Readers!

It's been a long time between posts, but this seemed an appropriate time for another one. As of Thursday 19th April 2007, I have officially become a graduate (and no longer a graduand!). It was a day filled with photos and celebrations... I'm just happy and relieved that everything is over. No more assignments and late-night studying for me :D After 5 years of hard toil, I now have 3 pieces of paper to show for it! haha

Surprisingly, one of the highlights of the ceremony (apart from receiving my certificates) was a speech made by a guest speaker, who I think is currently the acting head of a department in the BusEco faculty. Whilst most speeches are generally fairly mundane, his was quite inspiring, with the gist of the speech encouraging the new graduates to make a positive change in the world, and making the most of every opportunity that we get (sound somewhat familiar for some people? :P). He also quoted Shakespeare, which I guess a lot of people do these days, but this quote was especially apt given the audience and the occasion:

"Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them."

I guess this isn't just something relevant to the graduates, but to everyone whether they be young, old, middle-aged, or in the prime of their life. It's something that I'll remember.

Thanks to everyone, family and friends, who came to help celebrate this special occasion!

PS. yep, I just had to take a photo of me throwing my hat in the air! Couldn't not do it!

    (Un)Officially Graduated!

    Hey Readers,

Yep, another graduation/finishing uni post. As of Wednesday when uni results came out, I've officially (or unofficially until I get my certificates) graduated from uni! I think my CV will now look something like this:

    William Chuah; BCom/BEco, DipLan(Jap)

All I can say is that I'm relieved that I've finally finished uni and I'm looking forward to my post-uni life, whatever that may bring!

    Degree Complete!

    Hello Readers,

I'm going to keep it brief...I AM A FREE MAN!!! :D

Well, touch wood, if I pass my final 3 exams (which I should), my 5 years of tertiary education would have come to an end last Thursday. It's been party time ever since!

I'm so glad it's over. No more exam stress ever again! Wooohooo!

PS. I pity those who will still be at uni...I feel your pain...but after 5 years, do I sympathise? Well, not really! :P

    No More Uni Classes...Forever!

    Hey All,

Today is a momentous day. I had my last hour of uni class...forever! Well, this is assuming I don't do post grad (which is highly unlikely) and if I don't fail, touch wood *touches wood*. I still have a couple of assessments to get done, but other than that, only 3 exams to go! All I can say is "Bring it...BRING IT AWWWN!!!".

Yep, I just want it to be all over.

Looking forward to 9th November 2006 at about 12:10pm. I'll be safely done by then.

Then it'll be paaar-tay time! BRING IT AWWWN!!!

    six years...SIX YEARS?!

    Hello Readers,

It just occurred to me the other day that I have officially hit 6 years of service at my part-time job at the accounting firm. If you include the times I have been away (travelling overseas or working in Sydney), I have been working there for 6 years straight. How's that for loyalty (or laziness in not finding another job)?

I first did work experience there in year 11 in 2001, then got called back to start part-time work in September. I'd work 2 hours a week after school when I had spares in the last 2 periods. I started on about $5.20 per hour (when I was 15), and was pretty rapt when I got a 40c increase the following week, after I turned 16!

Anyway, it looks like I'll be ending my career there in December this year, when I either go on exchange or on holiday. Reckon 6 years service should equate to some sort of gift? I know 10 years is a golden watch...maybe I can get a gold-plated keyring at the very least?

    Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho, it's off on exchange I go?

    Hey All,

It could be one of those life-changing moments, but then again it might not lead to anything...but last night, I passed the review board! So an AIESEC exchange is now more than ever a serious option. We'll see where the next month takes me...exciting times!

    A Sign of the Times

    Dear Readers,

Yes, it's been a long while since the last post, but I haven't really had anything interesting to say (you can probably debate whether or not this is interesting either). I just thought I'd share an observation I made the other night:

After I had dropped my sister off at the 24 hour Pancake Parlour on Doncaster Rd, I was on my way back home when I passed by a Shell petrol station (opposite Pancake Parlour). I looked up at the petrol sign board to check the latest petrol price, and was almost shocked at what my eyes were seeing...nope, it wasn't that the price was sky high (it was "relatively" cheap at 120.9c/litre for unleaded), but the fact that the numbers were DIGITAL!!! If that's not a sign of the times, I don't know what is! I guess the dude standing behind the counter got so sick of changing the price board manually so regularly that they decided to install a digital price sign. How soothing is it to know that a 10c hike in the petrol price is only a button push away. Gone are the days when you could clamber to the pump to fill up just before the petrol man manually adjusted the price upwards, and get the previous price (I think that's how it worked). Ah well.

I'm not sure if other people have seen this digital occurence around town also, or if it's just me.

Anyway, that's all from me for now.

    Over and out.

    William

PS. for the record, the LPG and Diesel price signs were still using the "old" manual system

    Three of the Best

    Hello Readers!

Yep, it's been a while. Between uni, the World Cup, exams, the World Cup, work, and of course the World Cup, I have been too lazy to post anything.

Anyway, to stir up a bit of discussion (maybe), I just thought I'd note down "Three of the Best":

    Charlize Theron

    Kate Beckinsale

    Jessica Alba

In no particular order, I reckon that they're 3 of the hottest ladies around at the moment. Mmm...pure quality. Perennial favourite Angelina Jolie missed the cut unfortunately, but I think the aforementioned 3 provide solid competition. Come on people, bring on your thoughts and opinions! hehe

I'd better start organising my stuff for my 4 week Sydney sojourn. See you in a month!

    40km/h Zones

    Hey All,

Random observation: on Monday afternoon as I was driving home past one of those lit up 40km/h signs on Middleborough Rd/Stevensons Rd, I saw it stop flashing. Yep, it was exactly 4pm.

Today as I was driving to uni, I again past the same set of 40km/h signs and this time I saw them start flashing. And yep, it was exactly 8am.

I've driven past there so many times but I've never seen the 40km/h signs just light up or just stop lighting up. But now it's happened twice in 3 days...wow, so freaky.

Another thing...yesterday I was one of about 20 cars parked in a row on the gravel. When I went back to my car, my car was flanked by P-platers. Quite literally 6-7 cars on either side of me consecutively were P-plated cars. So out of the 20 cards, I think I was maybe 1 of 2 or 3 cars without a P-plate. I thought that was funny.

    Yep, boredom has hit.

    Over and out.

You Know You're Getting Old When...

    Hello Readers,

Ever get the feeling you're getting old? Yes, I may only be 21, but it's while I'm at uni that I start feeling kinda old. It's a weird feeling, as I'm always used to being the youngest (or one of the youngest) in my group of friends. Anyway, here are a couple of indications of my "oldness":

    (1) In the first week of uni this year during the first Japanese tute, people did a self-introduction (in Japanese) saying what year they were in. Everyone else in the class had said that they were either 1st, 2nd or 3rd year students! So it was kinda embarrassing :S

    (2) When I through the car park and to my car, I regularly see numerous P-plated cars surrounding my P-plateless car. I definitely feel like the odd one out there...haha

    (3) I'm one of the remaining people still around at uni from the initial "1st year group" of friends that we formed in the first few weeks of uni. I'm still unemployed :(

Ah well, not a very entertaining post but I thought a couple of those observations were interesting. Oh yeah, one more thing...I definitely do feel quite old hanging around AIESECers now, cos everyone is so young!

Alright, I'm waiting for all your old fart jokes now (as lame as they may be)...I'm looking more towards the AIESEC gang *cough* Shu and Emma :P You young 'uns!

    Over and out.

    What Do You Think?

    Hey All,

A couple of weeks ago after a fairly lengthy conversation with a couple of people about their religion, of which they are very devout followers. This got me thinking a bit, and I thought that I'd put this question out there:

Would the world be a better place without religion?

I may be naive in stating that question, and there are obviously many arguments and other factors which surround this topic, but what do people think? I might look at this in hindsight and think "Why did I ask such a silly question?", but now it's been said I'd be interested in what people think.

In the meantime, it's back to the books!

    Class of 97-99 Reunion

    Hello Readers!

Last night some of our class of 1997-1999 from Balwyn High School met up for dinner/drinks. There were 13 of us in attendance, and it was great to catch up with them, some of who I hadn't seen in about 5 years! Also, since some of us moved up a year (doing 5 years instead of 6 years of high school), a lot of us lost touch at school, so I probably hadn't spoken to some people for about 6-7 years! Quite amazing.

Anyway, some people were saying that they didn't know how a reunion such as this would turn out, whether it'd be awkward or if we would get along. You see, back in the day from Year 7 to Year 9, we were all in the same class for the 3 consecutive years (yes, we were a "special class", part of the Accelerated Learning Program...haha) but the class was always segmented into different cliques. But I guess now everyone has matured (well, most people have :P) and looking back on our early high school years there were many great memories and laughs to be had (yes, and some laughs at my expense :S).

For some of us, it turned out to be a long night. We started at 3 Degrees at QV, and when that closed up we went to Hawthorn for a few more drinks after. From the initial group of 13 we ended the night with 4. Overall, I had a fantastic night, reminiscing about years gone by and it was interesting to see where people have come and gone.

So thanks to Claud, Kath, Vera, Annie, Shaun, Natalie, Belinda, Chris and Peter for coming out, and especially to Wilson, Leah and Rita for staying out til the very end! It was a really enjoyable night and funnily enough probably one of the best nights out I've had in a while! There are plans for another one of these and hopefully we'll get a bigger group out next time.

    Over and out.

    William

PS. yes, I did drink again...detox is well and truly over (I guess it never really got started). My motto from henceforth is "drink in moderation" :P
    March 12

    Ok, No More Detox

    Hey All,

Another unsuccessful night of attempting to go detox. It was a friend's welcome back/birthday party, so I had a few to drink. I just couldn't not have any. So from now on, my philosophy is "drink in moderation" as a compromise for my drinking overdose (well, almost) in Sydney. It also means that I'll get a regular shave...haha.

    Over and out.

    Detox? What Detox?

    Greetings Readers,

Some of you may or may not know that I was attempting to go on an alcohol detox when I got back from Sydney. The reason being was that in the time I was up there, I think I may have done some serious liver damage and thought that it may be a good idea if I gave them a rest for a while.

In the first week back, I went to a 21st and a house party, and promised myself that they would be the last times I drank for a month. That drinking hiatus lasted the whole of 7 days (yep, one whole week!) before the detox was ended last night at a friend's party in the city. I guess it doesn't help that I'm now on my full licence, so I can actually drink then drive (no, I'm not a bloody idiot...I make sure I'm "feeling" less than .05 first! hehe).

Anyway, this is what I might start doing: everytime I drink, I'll shave. So if I don't drink, I won't shave. Hence if I'm unshaven and looking scruffy, it means I haven't had a drink! Hmm...sounds kinda silly and it's not really an incentive not to drink eh? Anyone got any other ideas? haha

Ok, enough of that nonsense. I should try doing some work now :S

These Boots Are Made For Walking

    Hey All,

Just thought I'd give a run down on the Sydney Bars/Clubs/Lounges/Pubs that I went to. And yep, I walked to all these places, even to the ones at The Cross. Feel free to give your comments on any of them from your personal experiences!:

Lower Town (Central to Liverpool St)
    - Scubar :: similar to Melbourne's; lots of European internationals
    - Charlie Chan's :: quite a number of Japanese there; cheap Toohey's on weekdays
    - Cheers :: only a brief sojourn into a famously named bar; wasn't there long enough to comment

Lower-Middle Town (Liverpool St to Town Hall)
    - Scruffy Murphy's :: one of many Irish pubs in Sydney; has a good $5 steak meal
    - Equilibrium :: 1st floor, World Square; didn't venture to the 2nd floor where the club was; basically has every single beer you can think of on tap! An amazing array of choices!
    - 3 Wise Monkeys :: some memorable moments here with my Melbourne friends; not the best of places, but only a 2 minute walk from my apartment
    - V-Bar :: half-price cocktails on Thursday; a quiet place when I went, but I hear it warms up on weekends
    - Shark Hotel :: not a big fan, as it has really wide open spaces; basically come here if you don't want to cough up $25 to get into Space
    - Space :: upstairs of Sharkies, a crazy place with plenty to offer; a predominantly Asian club but pricey
    - Maloney's :: quiet little bar next to the games arcade, only went there once
    - Star Bar :: the jewel in Sydney's clubbing crown...for me anyway! Went there several times, and usually had a really good crowd; lots of Chinese, Japanese and Koreans
    - Pavillion :: where you go to when you get turned down at Star Bar; $2.50 drinks at certain times was good

Middle Town (Town Hall to Martin Place)
    - Hotel Coronation :: the pub where people at Citigroup would go after work on a Friday night; had many drinks shouted for me here by fellow workmates!
    - The Arthouse :: underneath the Citigroup building, another popular post-work hang out; has a nice decor
    - a sports bar opposite work on Pitt St [forgot the name] :: went there at a bad time, not many people there
    - GAB Bar :: formerly the Hilton Hotel's bar; not too bad, but was only there briefly after work one day
    - Hotel Sweeney's :: nice little pub with a Thai restaurant on top
    - Statement Bar :: hidden, but a nice chilled place for a quiet drink after work
    - Verandah Bar :: an Asian club at Martin Place on Castelreagh/Elizabeth St; has two big rooms, and it's where you'll see alot of Sydney's teenage to mid-20s Asians on a Friday night; it's either here or Space
    - Hotel Chambers :: was there for an intern's 22nd party...had alright couches and bar

Upper-Middle Town (Martin Place to Circular Quay)
    - Bar 333 :: not a bad bar in the middle of Martin Place, where alot of work people go
    - Senate Bar :: in the basement of the Macquarie Bank building where its employees like to hang out
    - Establishment :: one of those "upper-class" places where a lot of "lower-class" people go; full of snobs and a pretentious crowd; otherwise, has a very classy interior! haha...but expensive drinks!
    - Johnson's Pub :: was there one day on a weekend for a quiet drink with my Melbourne friends
    - Jackson's Bar :: dropped by very quickly one night with various interstaters who were working at the RBA
    - The Republican :: was there in the middle of the afternoon, so it was fairly quiet. Was there with a fellow intern before he left for a Thailand holiday

Top End (Circular Quay & The Rocks)
    - pub under -5 at Circular Quay [forgot the name] :: this was the first stop on a bar crawl that I took some Melbourne people on
    - Opera Bar :: apart from the drink prices, has the best views in town
    - The Australian Hotel :: delicious gourmet pizzas; my favourite is the roast duck pizza, absolutely packed with duck!
    - pub and bar I went to at The Rocks with a fellow Melbournian and 2 Perthies [forgot the names] :: spent the night drinking away at The Rocks; has a very country feel to it

    Darling Harbour
    - Pontoon :: has some good RnB music, and has nice views of the harbour

    King St Wharf
    - Cargo :: seems to be the same franchise as Cargo down here at the Docklands; a bit overrated, but I never got into the lounge (VIP only I think), only the bar
    - The Loft :: very nice, suave lounge/bar with an awesome view; one of the best places I went to
    - Bungalow 8 :: quite similar to Cargo, just on the other end of the block

    King's Cross ("The Cross")
    - Hotel Strand :: not quite at The Cross, but on the way on William St; was my stopover between my farewell dinner at Bar Reggio's (where I had lots of wine) and drinks at Bourbon
    - Sapphire :: had a Melbourne feel with the dark loungey areas, but not a fan of the crowd or music
    - Empire :: smelt severely of sweat, not a great place just for that reason
    - Bourbon :: only here for a short while after the aforementioned big wine night

Places I wanted to go to but didn't get the chance:
    - Gas :: on Elizabeth St near Central Station, this club re-opened just before I left
    - Home Bar :: well-reknowned at Darling Harbour
    - Martin Place Bar :: at Martin Place
    - Slip Inn :: the pub where Prince Frederik met his Australian Princess

    Total Places Visited: 39

Not a bad effort eh? I'll see if I can make it to that many places in Melbourne over the next 12 months! haha

    Guess Who's Back? Back Again...

    Hello Friends!

Yes, I'm back! After a 2.5 month stint in Sydney, I have returned to Melbourne to start another semester of uni. I must say it feels great to be back in the home town. I've said many times that Sydney would be a great place to work for a few years, but Melbourne definitely is the place to be. To be honest, I've had enough of Sydney for the timebeing, even though I was only there for about 11 weeks. You may remember my post about how great it is to live in the city, but I guess there is a downside: you're in the middle of everything and sometimes you just want to get away from it all, but you can't because you live there. Your little piece of privacy and salvation is in the very heart of the city!

Anyway, enough bitching about Sydney. I must admit though, Sydney is a lovely city and it was good for a change of scenery over the Summer. The experience of working at Citigroup as well as living it up in the biggest city in the country is something that I'll remember for a while. Although it's not as extravagant as the experiences that some of you readers had over Summer (you know who you are...gallavanting all over Europe and/or Asia!), I have come away from the Summer break with a clearer idea of where I want to go work-wise in the future, as well as further building my networks in industry. Yay!

Funnily enough, I'm looking forward to starting uni again. Maybe it's because I was working full-time during the holidays, but it'll be good to see everyone again. Cheers to the uni lifestyle, before we enter the endless days in the workforce!

Week 10 @ Citigroup - The Final Frontier

    Hi All,

Yep, the last week of work at Citigroup has come and gone. I must say that it will be sad waking up on Monday morning and not being able to walk into the office (they took away my security pass :|) and not seeing the colleagues I had worked with for the past 10 weeks. Equally, I can't wait to get back to Melbourne and enjoy what I have left of my Summer holidays! Anyway, here is a quick review of my last week:

    ---
    [Day 43]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - I was in the office yesterday (Sunday) from 1:30pm til about 7:30pm to work on the presentation for Wednesday. I was dressed like a bum, in a polo, shorts and thongs, cos no one was around!
    - I scored 2 free Hoyts movie tickets! We had a team meeting today and Andy gave each team member a pair of tickets as a reward for our hard work over month end

    [Day 44]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - I did a lot of work on the presentation today, just finalising content and fixing up the Powerpoint. I'm feeling a bit nervous and apprehensive, but at the same time quite relaxed about the presentation. Quite a weird feeling, but maybe it's cos I'm tired of thinking about it

    [Day 45]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - phew! What a relief! Presentation went by pretty much without a hitch, and the audience seemed to be quite impressed. A few of the interns said it was very professional and very well done, so I was really pleased with that. The format and presentation of each groups contrasted quite a bit cos there weren't many guidelines. Also, I was commended by the CIB CFO who I spent the day with. Commendations from the top...can't beat that! :)
    - just a tad disappointed that the CEO didn't turn up. He was probably the main reason why I was nervous about the presentation, but considering he was supposed to meet the interns on Day 1 and come Day 45 he still hadn't, it was a bit of a let down
    - had some beer and nibbles after the presentations with the interns and various other divisional managers. Was good to wind down after such a big afternoon
    - one of the interns, Jee-Lin, was celebrating her 22nd birthday, so we went to a place called Hotel Chambers for a few drinks and more nibbles. It was a great night!
    - I popped by the office on the way to walking home. I gave IB Chris a call cos I thought he'd be in the office still, and I was right. So he gave me a tour of the IB floor at about 11:15pm at night, and also had a look at the CEO's office. It was decked out in cream leathered couches, a flat screen TV, and lots of sporting memorabilia. Lucky man!

    [Day 46]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - had a final mentor meeting with Shane. We covered a few things, but these were the main points:
    (1) if I was a grad now, they would have offered me a full time position!
    (2) we would keep in touch for the next 12 months, and if it suits both of us, there will be a job offer in 12 months time
    (3) he will put in a word for me in Melbourne to try to get me a part-time position there when I return home
    (4) he has spoken to the CFO and they have discussed flying me up to Sydney during my uni breaks to work on projects
    (5) he agreed to be my mentor throughout the year, mainly through emails and a monthly call
All I can say to all that is: SWEET! :D
    - I organised a final intern lunch, so a last chance for everyone to mingle on a social level before things finished. Almost everyone turned up, with 13/15 interns in attendance. It was good to see almost everyone there!
    - I began cleaning out my inbox today, which I had to cull quite regularly throughout the past 10 weeks. At one stage yesterday it hit the 1,250 mark or so!
    - I finished off the day playing tennis at night with the same 3 guys as the last time. It's always fun playing with those guys. There is non-stop sledging, and it gets pretty competitive. Just when it was getting interesting in the last set, the bloody tennis court attendance switched the lights off! Grrr!

    [Day 47]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - Gillian (CFO) came by early in the morning to say goodbye to me, gave me positive feedback on my presentation again, and then said to make sure to keep in touch. She also mentioned that Citigroup was always looking for "young and enthusiastic individuals" to work for them (or words to that effect), so I'm glad that she mentioned that to me. It was a good feeling getting a goodbye from the CFO, and the fact that she bothered to take the time to come over and talk to me. I found that to be fantastic, especially knowing how busy she always is
    - had HR feedback on the presentation. It was mostly positive, with a couple of ideas that could be worked on. Overall, HR thought it was a very good presentation
    - had a performance review with Chris and Derek, and again it was all positive. They were very happy with the way I fitted in with the team, and the way I took to and ran with the tasks that I was given. Good comments all round!
    - I made an intern role description for my position for next year. This was one of the pieces of feedback I gave them, so Shane thought it would be good if I wrote something up. I completed it and sent it to Shane, Chris and Derek, and they were all pretty pleased with it
    - I was presented with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon at the end of the day in front of my colleagues at the desk. Definitely a moment to remember!
    - the team headed down to Bar Reggio for my farewell dinner. Needless to say there was a lot of wine consumed, both red and white. Seeing it was my farewell, it was fair to say that I had my fair share. I had no idea how much I had cos they kept topping my glass up! Overall, it was a fantastic night, and a great way to wrap up the week! :D

    ---

So there it is, my last week in a nutshell. This last week in Sydney will be spent catching up with friends before I fly back to Melbourne next Sunday! For those who may be wondering (and I'm sure there are plenty of you! haha), I will be arriving at about 7pm on a Qantas flight. Feel free to bring a welcome home banner or something...hehe.

Alrighty, I should be off to make some dinner and drinks plans. Only one week more, and counting!

    Over and out.

Random Thoughts from Sydney - Week 9

    Hey Hey Reader!

My time in Sydney is quickly drawing to a close. Kinda sad, but all good things come to an end eventually I guess. Here are some thoughts of the past week, week 9:

    ---
    [Day 38]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
     - today was the start of an interesting week. My replacement (her name is Charlotte) for when I finish my internship arrived today, so I began transition with her (doesn't this sound familiar?). It was kinda weird transitioning with someone 7 years your senior, especially when she had worked in London for 5 years in Counter Fitzgerald (a large trading house in the UK and US), but it began well
    - a bit of trivia: my replacement used to go out with Socceroo player Lucas Neill!
    - I think my microwave is possessed. Lately it has been beeping on its on accord, and 6's keep appearing on the screen
    - set another late-office-leaving record for the second time in 2 days, leaving at 7:45pm

    [Day 39]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - Juliet brought in a CD containing photos and videos from the karaoke night last week. I got some ribbing from some people about some pictures/videos, but I took it like a man! haha
    - I had an earlyish finish today, leaving the office at about 6:45pm

    [Day 40]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - had dinner in the office for the first time. It's month end, and everyone is busy around this time of the month, so everyone stayed back and a dinner menu went around at about 6:30pm. I got a "South Pacific" burger and fries from Global Burgers. Pretty unhealthy, but hey, it's all paid for! Most people were at work til about 9:00pm, but I didn't leave til about 9:50pm as I was trying to do some work on my presentation
    - one of the guys who works on consolidating reports used to play rugby with the NSW Waratahs about 10 years ago! He played about 12 games, and yes,he's big! He played as a second rower, and you definitely wouldn't want to run into him in a dark alley. But he's a friendly giant to be honest

    [Day 41]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - I did a Boost Juice run this afternoon, and ended up bringing back 6 Boosts! I was given alot of shrapnel, and spent about 2 minutes at the countertrying to count out the right change to pay the chick! She asked me how I got this job, but I kinda brought it upon myself for offering to do the run
    - had another all-expenses paid dinner, this time from Wagamamas (we have one in our building). I had 5 duck gyosas (friend dumplings), teriyaki chicken and salad. The dumplings were good, but not so the main meal. But again, it was all paid for!
    - I left a bit earlier this time, at about 8:45pm

    [Day 42]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - I completed transition yesterday, and had typed up all the procedures for my daily tasks, so Charlotte was pretty much set to complete my former tasks all on her own. For that reason, I moved to a different desk, and attempted to work on my presentation. Needless to say I wasn't too productive, and still have a lot of work to do
    - a colleague of mine saw me out at lunch with 2 female interns and she made fun of me, saying that last time she saw me with 1 girl, and now I've got 2! Ah well, I'm getting used to all this ribbing now...haha. It's all a bit of fun
    - another colleague organised a farewell dinner for me next week, which was nice of her. We're off to a place called Bar Reggio which is near Stanley St (I think), where alot of Italian restaurants are (Sydney's version of Lygon St, but no comparison I'm sure!). I've been told by a few colleagues that the food here is absolutely fantastic, so I'm looking forward to it!

    ---

That's it for now. I've got so much more work to do on my presentation it's not funny! Have to consolidate all my material that I've got. Ah well, I should get started now. Wish me luck, cos I'll need it!

    The Melbourne & Sydney Difference

    Hey All,

It feels weird that I'm doing an update so soon after my previous one (yesterday). It's an oddity, so enjoy it while it lasts!

Anyway, lots of people have asked me in the past what the difference was between Melbourne and Sydney, and which place I preferred more (MELBOURNE!!! :D). I've always said that walking around Melbourne City, it felt a lot more relaxed and laid back, whereas Sydney felt more busy and fast paced. I couldn't give a good reason why though.

Speaking to a fellow Melbournian intern (at Macquarie Bank), I sort of realised what it was. We were talking about how some cities such as London were both the financial/economical and political capital of the country, and how that may be too much for a city to cope with, ie. a city becomes a Metropolis, and the issues become too big for the city. Whilst Sydney is the financial capital of the country (and to a lesser extent, political), Melbourne holds neither of those titles, hence is one reason why the city has a more laid back feel than Sydney.

Another factor I thought of was the fact that Sydney is probably also the tourist capital of the country. Given they have such attractions as the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House (both of which I think are a bit overrated, the more I see them...Opera House as a man-made wonder of the world? Give me the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum or Stonehenge anyday!), they attract a lot more foreigners which adds to the fast "paciness" of the city. This is because they are anywhere and everywhere, filling the streets wherever you go.

I think I've taken too long to make my point, but what I'm trying to say is that MELBOURNE ROCKS!!! haha...I think Sydney is a great place for a holiday and a change of scenery, but in the long-term Melbourne is definitely the place to be. All in agreeance, say aye!

Anyway, it's that time of day again...dinner time. Those who have travelled/lived in both Melbourne and Sydney, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

    Holler out!

A Random Thoughts Hit! Weeks 6-8

    Hello Reader!

It's been a while, but here's the next instalment of my daily updates, random thoughts style!

    ---
    <Week 6>

    [Day 24]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - I noticed this a while ago, but the area I work in is quite male-dominated. But I think there has been a conscious decision to increase female numbers at Citigroup. Out of the 15 interns, 8 are girls
    - McCain's fettucine carbonara has served me well in my time here so far, almost as a staple/ stock standard dinner. Served with a bit of rocket salad, it goes down nicely for dinner

    [Day 25]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - we had an internship "health check" with HR today. It was interesting to hear that most, if not all interns were going through similar experiences, eg. frustrated at the lack of structure and sometimes a lack of work
    - today was the first time I consumed beer during work hours, over lunch with a couple of interns

    [Day 26]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - one of the fixed income traders is only 27 and has been a trader for 7 years already. He started in New York, did a few years in Tokyo, and a couple more here in Sydney. He's already the head of his desk, and a bit of a "superstar" on the trading floor. Most traders are around 35-45
    - I took note of a quote he made during the business lunch today: "One good trade doesn't make a career, but one bad trade can break it". Definitely something to think about

    [Day 27]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - it was long overdue, but I finally used the work gym for the first time. It's a lot smaller than the Monash Uni gym but it's still good for a work gym
    - I had an intern presentation planning meeting with my co-presenter. Using my former-presidential skills, I was basically able to use my influential skills to guide the discussion in the direction I wanted it to go! hehe...experience counts!

    [Day 28]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - these days I'm getting things done pretty quickly, so I'm finding that I have a lot more gaps during the day now

    <Week 7>

    [Day 29]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - since it was raining this morning, I decided to walk through Town Hall Square from the corner of Kent St and Bathurst St. It literally meant that at least half my journey is undercover! So about 4 minutes of my 8 minute walk is dry! Sweet! It also means that I don't have to wait at the Park St and George St intersection which is always busy

    [Day 30]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - I spent the whole day on the trading floor today. It was weird being away from my desk and usual surroundings for the first time in 6+ weeks
    - it was good to sit with the traders to see what they get up to. They all have at least 3 monitors, some with 4 or 5 with various information on each! It's a crazy life
    - family arrived in Sydney tonight...a week with a cosy apartment with 5 people at my place

    [Day 31]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - today's business lunch served up a feast! They had chicken carbonara dish, a pesto pasta dish, and some foccacia. I helped myself to plenty of food and boy, was it a good change from the usual Citigroup sandwiches!

    [Day 32]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - I randomly ran into Yi at a Chinatown foodcourt last night when I was there with my family. I was kinda surprised to see her there cos I had forgotten that she was coming up
    - had another business lunch today, but it was back to sandwiches and wraps again. Ah well, the hot lunches can only last for so long

    [Day 33]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - spent about 3/4 of the day shadowing a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Citigroup, Gillian Larkins. As expected, there were a lot of meetings (I totally understood what she had to go through, especially after so many meetings for me last year!). It was a great experience to see what she got up to, especialy sitting in on a confidential phone conference call with about 20 CFOs from around the AP region!
    - before one of the meetings, I spoke to someone who was about to meet with Gill. Turns out she used to be in AIESEC at AU in Adelaide, and was talking about AIESEC with a fellow alumni that morning!

    <Week 8>

    [Day 34]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - a couple of my managers (Andy and Chris) have been interviewing candidates for the position that I will be vacating. Chris has said that the talent pool is a bit thin at the moment, and a couple of people (Chris and Ben) have kinda jokingly said that I should defer or do uni via correspondence and start full-time work there now!

    [Day 35]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - I've learnt not to trust a $10 haircut place again. I went to a place near Woolies after work. The guy who cut my hair was quite young and obviously an apprentice, as his boss was giving him tips and instructions on what to do. I thought the sides and back was a bit short (he used a shaver but I prefer scissors), but my colleagues thought it was a good haircut when I saw them later
    - had a dinner and karaoke night with my team. There were 10 people at dinner, then 8 at karaoke. Everyone gave it a good go, so it was a lot of fun. We were initially going to stay for 2 hours, but it ended up being 3 hours!
    - at dinner, someone noticed that our seating arrangement was almost exactly the same as our office seating arrangement. Quite freaky! Creatures of habit for sure...we're so used to it it's probably in our subconscious

    [Day 36]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - our business lunch today involved resume writing and interview tips. Part of the interview tip was to be conscious of your grooming and presentation, and I got noticed by the (female) presenter for being well-dressed, as I was one of only 3 guys who was wearing a tie. Woohoo, another fashion compliment!

    [Day 37]
    RaNdOm ThOuGhTs:
    - had a duck/veg/rice Thai lunch with Derek, Morgs and Chris at the basement foodcourt today. It was good value, only $7.90 for a duck meal. Yum!
    - had my latest night in the office so far. Due to some stuff ups from operations earlier on in the day, a lot of the team was delayed with their work. I didn't leave til about 7:10pm

    ---

I hope you all enjoyed an abridged version of my updates! It's about time for dinner...going to head to Chinatown for a CNY eve meal. I'll be popping down to Chinatown tomorrow too, just to check out what's happening. Probably see some lion and dragon dances. Oh yeah, in CNY tradition, I'll be wearing new clothes too! hehe

Happy Chinese New Year to all!
